Microsoft Corp. today announced that Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is rolling out Microsoft Live@edu to provide anytime, anywhere* communication services to its students, faculty and alumni. Live@edu will allow LACCD to provide everyone on campus with easy-to-use cloud communication and collaboration tools while saving administrative and IT staff time. After evaluating both Live@edu and Google Apps for Education, LACCD made the decision to adopt Microsoft Live@edu due to preference for the technology's security features and identity management capabilities, seamless integration with its on premise Exchange solution, and ease of use.

LACCD is the largest community college district in the United States, serving more than 250,000 students annually at nine colleges spread throughout 36 cities in the greater Los Angeles area. Accounts are being created for more than 2.5 million student records.

"Live@edu aligns with LACCD's strategic vision to modernize and improve our colleges to ensure Los Angeles residents are trained with the skills needed to fill jobs of the 21st century," said Jorge Mata, chief information officer for LACCD. "We needed a solution that would be easy to administer across all our colleges. One of the reasons we chose Microsoft Live@edu over Google Apps for Education is because it provides us with simple and automated management along with the visibility and control we need to apply our policies across our student information systems."

To develop a truly customized solution for LACCD, Live@edu teamed up with SADA Systems to deliver a solution that mitigates the need for manual student email registration while reducing time and expense allocated toward the registration process. Once students register, they will automatically receive an email and collaboration account in real time.

"Our unique partnership with Microsoft enables LACCD's IT personnel to focus on the system's more mission-critical IT goals," said Niv Dolgin, director of IT, SADA Systems. "Streamlining the registration process is not only a win for LACCD IT personnel; it is a win for students and LACCD administrative staff."

Live@edu will allow LACCD to provide students with a single email address even if they are enrolled at multiple colleges. The same goes for faculty who teach at multiple colleges, thereby simplifying communication for both the district and those it serves. Live@edu will also help LACCD eliminate paper processes, such as printing fee receipts that can be emailed instead.

"We are excited to see the largest community college district in the U.S. deploy Live@edu to not only experience the benefits of a cloud-based collaboration service, but to also roll out a technology that will develop its students' skills," said Sig Behrens, general manager of U.S. Education for Microsoft. "LACCD is committed to student employability and recognizes the value to its students of skills gained by using Microsoft technology and that the knowledge will serve them well as they prepare to enter the workforce."

University selects OpenDNS Enterprise to protect its wired and Wi-Fi networks and nearly 3,000 student and faculty members while increasing Internet speed, centralizing management, and improving insights.

OpenDNS, the world's largest and fastest-growing provider of Internet security and DNS services that deliver a safer, faster and more intelligent Internet experience to everyone, today announced Regent University is using OpenDNS Enterprise, the favorite security solution of colleges and universities across the globe. Regent University, a leading academic center offering rigorous programs and high academic standards, selected OpenDNS Enterprise because the cloud-based solution allows for improved security and easier management and monitoring of its wired and Wi-Fi networks.

Prior to deploying OpenDNS Enterprise Regent University was using an appliance-based Blue Coat solution for some very basic filtering of malicious domains, but the solution tended to create more problems than it actually solved. The team was searching for a more comprehensive way to prevent malware from proliferating across the campus.

A trusted team of Regent University engineers who were familiar with OpenDNS’s home offerings recommended that Director of Network Engineering, Jonathan Harrell, and his team begin testing OpenDNS Enterprise. Right away it was clear that the DNS-based security solution was ideal for scaling to serve the large campus without creating network bottlenecks, and it would be able to uniquely prevent the proliferation of malware at the university.

“With lightweight OpenDNS Enterprise we can now identify and block malware before users even know how to find it,” explained Harrell. “More importantly, we can easily look at a high-level flyover of all of our networks and identify trends before they become problems. That means we’re preventing malware instead of cleaning it up.”

OpenDNS Enterprise offers a two-pronged approach to malware protection. First, the solution prohibits access to sites known to host malware so that the university’s students and faculty can’t download it. Second, OpenDNS Enterprise eliminates communication between devices that are already infected and the networks they access, meaning that malware and botnets are both disabled from communicating with their online hosts and proliferating across the network.

Additionally, OpenDNS Enterprise offers network managers the ability to easily gain insight on what is happening across their networks without having to sort through heavy or complicated reports. “The centralized OpenDNS Enterprise Web-based Dashboard allows us to regain complete control over our network,” Harrell continued. “Whether I’m making network changes, examining high-level network reports, or drilling down to identify the source of potential threats, I can do it all on the go with easy-to-understand reports.”

X1 Discovery, Inc., a leading enterprise eDiscovery and search software company supporting the cloud and the enterprise, today announced the availability of X1 Rapid Discovery through the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Solution Provider program. X1 Discovery is the first enterprise eDiscovery company to fully leverage the cloud architecture of AWS by uniquely being able to install and operate in an AWS customer’s IaaS cloud environment. An X1 Rapid Discovery Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is now available in the AWS directory, thus providing for the automated and expedient installation of X1 Rapid Discovery directly into the AWS cloud.

This means that AWS clients can now perform powerful on-demand search and eDiscovery of their data within their AWS environments worldwide without first exporting their data out of the cloud. Additionally, law firms and other eDiscovery professionals can now conduct early case assessment (ECA) and first pass review in their own instance of the AWS cloud, as opposed to transferring their client’s data to a vendor’s dedicated SaaS installation for cloud-based eDiscovery.

According to Barry Murphy, principal analyst at eDiscovery Journal, “X1 Rapid Discovery is built to be deployed in Cloud environments where there tend to be heterogeneous infrastructure elements. The system is not tightly wound to third party hardware so it can be decoupled so as to scale out and be virtualized more easily.” Murphy continues, “Perhaps most interesting to me is the work X1 Discovery has done to get into the Amazon AWS ISV program...X1 Discovery is really striking first.”

“We are pleased to team with Amazon Web Services to provide much needed enterprise eDiscovery and search directly within the AWS cloud environment through the innovation of X1 Rapid Discovery version 4,” says X1 Discovery’s CEO, John Patzakis. “Amazon’s criteria for entry into the Solutions Provider program is very comprehensive but it demonstrates that we meet all the requirements of a true IaaS cloud solution,” Patzakis continues. X1 Discovery is the first enterprise eDiscovery solution for collection and early case assessment to be demonstrably deployable and effectively operational in the IaaS cloud.

About X1 Rapid Discovery
With X1 Rapid Discovery, organizations can quickly access, search, triage and collect their data in their existing cloud environments, without having to first export that data; thereby transforming how organizations address the challenges of search, collection and analysis of cloud-based data. While other eDiscovery products require migrating or even shipping your data to the vendor tools, X1 Rapid Discovery is a hardware-independent software solution that uniquely installs and operates on demand where your data currently resides.

Benefits of X1 Rapid Discovery

Designed for virtualized environments and to scale out. Other eDiscovery solutions are mostly amalgams of OEM technology and monolithic architecture, preventing true virtualization and unsuited for the cloud.

Installs remotely in a matter of minutes, in the cloud or in your enterprise, without costly and rigid hardware requirements. This provides unique portability for immediate search and data investigation requirements.

Quickly search and cull up to terabytes of data stored within your enterprise or in the cloud, without ever exporting that data from its native environment.

Non-appliance solution with a simple flat fee licensing model and no GB processing fees.

Intuitive web user interface with matter centric work-flow for eDiscovery and enterprise search.

At Citrix Synergy™, the conference where cloud computing, networking and virtualization meet, Citrix announced Project Avalon, the next phase in the evolution to transform any Windows application or desktop into a cloud service delivered across any network, to any device. Citrix today delivers Windows apps and desktops to over 100 million users. With Project Avalon, Citrix integrates the breadth of its technologies to extend these same capabilities to the thousands of enterprise customers eager to adopt private cloud deployments that offer the same resource optimization, infrastructure agility and economics that are currently only provided by public cloud offerings such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Project Avalon empowers customers to rapidly deploy personalized Windows apps and desktops in a private cloud across single or multiple sites, and to utilize public clouds in a “capacity on demand” fashion in support of business initiatives such as business continuity, integrating mergers and acquisitions, or offshoring projects.

As the industry moves from the PC Era to the Cloud Era, the explosion of mobile devices and new applications is driving IT to provide anywhere access on any device. With millions of seats deployed worldwide, Citrix XenDesktop® is answering this need by providing simple and flexible solutions for the user along with the security and cost-savings benefits necessary to IT. Desktop virtualization has allowed enterprises to deploy virtual desktops at scale, across multiple datacenters and geographies. With this increase in scale, they are building datacenters, managing thousands of virtualized desktops and creating custom deployment scripts for automation, management and personalization of virtual applications and desktops. Whether customers are starting with a virtual desktop or private Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud, today there is clearly a need for the path leading to Project Avalon.

Introducing Project Avalon
Project Avalon delivers on the industry’s need for the next phase in cloud services – transforming any Windows application or desktop into a cloud service that can be seamlessly delivered across any network, to any device. Project Avalon enables those using private cloud solutions to create the following scenarios currently enjoyed via public cloud offerings today.

Quickly and simply deploy Windows apps and desktops as a cloud service
As virtual desktop deployments increase in size and scale, organizations are looking to cloud deployment models to enable self-service, cost effective, flexible and agile infrastructure to deliver Windows apps, desktops and data across private and public clouds. Project Avalon is a highly optimized and tuned integration of XenDesktop and CloudStack™ that enables multi-tenant deployment across multiple locations and multiple clouds, and delivery across any network to any device. Project Avalon provides organizations with the ability to shift apps and desktops into public clouds to deliver capacity on demand. This helps many customers today looking to support business continuity and disaster recovery initiatives, as well as those looking to better equip people in everyday scenarios such as enabling contractors, offshoring projects and integrating mergers and acquisitions.

Automate and efficiently provision, manage and orchestrate apps and desktops Project Avalon provides the ability to define and automate the creation of a workspace that can scale to any number of users from 100 to over one million. Any user, regardless of the workspace size, still experiences the same performance characteristics, network configuration and isolation requirements all while having the orchestration engine complete the deployment – hands-free. When it comes time to update apps or desktop images, the admin simply points to the new image, and Project Avalon handles draining servers and migrating subscribers without manual intervention.

Manage technology transitions at a business pace without taxing IT resources Project Avalon is built upon an open architecture that eliminates technology-specific management of Citrix XenApp®, XenDesktop, Windows Server, hyper-visor technology or public cloud offerings. The ability to “mix and match” enables IT to focus on delivering desktops and applications based upon business needs, rather than vendor-introduced technology transitions.

Seamlessly deliver a secure, cost-effective personalized workspace to every userUnlike “vanilla” Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) offerings in the market today, Project Avalon with integrated cloud storage via Citrix ShareFile® provides the capability to ensure that user profiles, settings and application data are securely delivered to every user. Regardless of where the information is coming from or the type of device it is going to, the virtual desktop experience remains persistent and personal each and every time.

Inside Project Avalon
Project Avalon creates an infrastructure that transforms any desktop to an Amazon-style cloud. By leveraging the new Citrix CloudPlatform, powered by Apache CloudStack. Avalon will also make it easy for existing Citrix customers to adopt new features at whatever pace they like, allowing them to “mix-and-match” different versions of Windows Server, XenDesktop and XenApp – and span across any mix of public and private clouds. Project Avalon also incorporates and extends the app orchestration technology from the Citrix Cloud Provider pack, which is available to over 2000 Citrix Service Provider (CSP) partners and hundreds of thousands of hosted desktop users. Service providers can deploy Project Avalon as a highly scalable, fully multi-tenant, multi-site cloud and deliver self-service enabled, personalized Windows apps and desktops to organizations of all sizes that will seamlessly integrate with enterprise private clouds.

Project Avalon’s integration with ShareFile enables personalized user setting and data across all deployment models leveraging cloud economics. CloudGateway™ delivers Project Avalon apps, desktops and data to any device via secure self-service enterprise app store Citrix NetScaler® powers the world’s largest clouds today and ensures security, high performance, reliability and availability.

Availability
At this point in time, we are not announcing availability of Project Avalon. Citrix XenDesktop and CloudStack are available separately at this time. Also, authorized Citrix Service Provider partners have exclusive access to the Citrix Cloud Provider Pack which provides them with efficiencies in the data center, superior end-user experience with all types of apps, and support for every type of device.

NES Software has announced the latest release of WinOnX, its easy-to-use application that makes it possible to run Microsoft Windows software on an Apple Macintosh. The newest version, WinOnX 1.3, adds support for many additional Windows applications, and a new program compatibility database that lets users quickly see how likely their program is to work with WinOnX and if there are any known issues. WinOnX 1.3 also offers the ability to launch multiple instances of a Windows program simultaneously and supports native Mac OS X open-file dialog.

In addition, WinOnX 1.3 now includes automatic problem analysis — making it fast and easy to diagnose and resolve errors — and the ability to rate, review and comment on program compatibility right from the status bar. WinOnX supports over 70 percent of Windows programs, requires no Windows boot time and has a low cost, easy setup. The latest enhancements are a big win for customers that must navigate between the incompatible worlds of Apple and Microsoft Windows software.

The first release of WinOnX promised Mac users a way to run their critical Windows software without the complexity and cost of virtualization programs, purchasing additional licenses, time spent setting up Windows or resorting to the command line — and it delivered. WinOnX 1.3 continues delivering on that promise by making the software even more robust and easy to use. Users can interact more naturally with Windows applications due to the application’s improved full screen view and better multiple printer integration.

WinOnX is based on the latest version of the open source Wine library, version 1.4, and launches faster than other virtual environments. Users simply install WinOnX 1.3, locate their Windows application and double-click — that’s it. Unlike with other tools, there’s no need to wait for virtual environments to load; once WinOnX is installed, users can launch their Windows apps directly with no extra steps. Even better, at $4.99, WinOnX is an affordable way to have access to the world of Windows software without leaving the Mac.

Customers that have tried the latest release, WinOnX 1.3, are pleased; one user commented,

“Unbelievable, but it works. When I consider how Parallels slowed down my system, not to talk about the booting time, this program is a real liberation for my Mac.”

System Requirements
WinOnX requires Apple Macintosh OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or later and at least 91.3 MB of space to install.

Pricing and Availability
WinOnX is priced at $4.99 and can be found in the Apple Mac App Store.

TechNavio's analysts forecast the Global Virtualization Security Management Solutions market to grow at a CAGR of 49.53 percent over the period 2011-2015. One of the key factors contributing to this market growth is the increasing deployment of applications in the virtualized product environment. The Global Virtualization Security Management Solutions market has also been witnessing the virtualization security solutions for multiple platforms. However, the low control on data could pose a challenge to the growth of this market.

Key vendors dominating this market space include Trend Micro Inc., Juniper Networks Inc., VMware Inc., and Symantec Corp.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from TechNavio's IT Security team said; Most companies use virtualization technology for deploying their application servers and databases. Also, virtualization security vendors are placing greater importance on security for server and database virtualization. Although security solutions for virtual environments are increasing and vendors are adding new features such as log management and web access management, the major market driver remains securing the virtual servers.

According to the report, one of the major drivers of the Global Virtualization Security Management Solutions market is the increasing severity of security threats on the virtual environment/infrastructure. Securing the virtual environment helps to monitor the entire system and report any threat to the administrator. In this way security threats affecting other systems in the same environment can be reduced, because each machine has multiple virtual instances housed in it. Therefore, increasing security threats to the virtual environment is driving the market.

Further, the report also discusses that data sprawl in the virtual environment could hinder the growth of the market.
