I know I need 1 NIC for the Host, and 1 NIC for the Win2008 VM, but can I use an internal network for the Virtual Desktop Pool (no NICs) if I use HyperV? Would that change if I used vSphere 5.1?

Thank you.

Hii All,

I want to know about the basics of networking for VMs,most importantly on what basis does one assign IP addresses to the Vms while configuring if i am assigning static ip addresses.

I wanted to understand the different scenarios and usage accordingly which IP addresses are assigned -

1) when i want only the VMs to talk to each other only.

2)when i want the VMs to talk to other physical computers on the same network as host network.

3)when i want the VMs to access the internet.

4)when i want the VMs to talk to other VMs on another host on the same network as the former host
Thanks and Regards,
In my testing the VM's speed of coping from the physical server to a VM is extremely slow. So I've obviously made a configuration mistake.

How should I proceed?

To that effect I have been tasked to make a research on the subject and I have made tremendous progress.

Unfortunately I have got to the part of my research where I need to simulate my work with some kind of simulators specific to network Virtualization and resource allocation but I ant seem to find the right tool dedicated to Network Virtualization. I know many of you out there have been in this field long enough to know what is and what is not. Kindly guide me on the tools I could use for what I have described above

Hi there all,

First of all this seems like a friendly and interesting place, so thanks to everyone for making it so.

I'm an electronic engineer, so I know little about virtualization but am keen to learn, I am currently setting up a home virtualization cluster with OpenVZ I'm planning on running a (couple of) web server(s), a version control server, a file server, and a few machines I can experiment with.

I would like to run these machines on a small 2 node cluster, each machine only has a small (8gb) SSD boot drive, I would like to store the actual containers on another drive. How is this usually done? with a NAS, with a drive attached to one of the nodes, or something else?

Both these options have disadvantages, a NAS is costly and slow, and an drive attached to one of the nodes is annoyingly non-modular and asymmetrical.

Any ideas are welcome!

Edit: Just had another idea, I could attatch the disk to one node and have a virtual machine as a fileserver, this machine would have to start first and be non-migratable (pretty sure thats not a word), this machine would then serve the rest of the nodes with a network drive. The advantage of this is it doesnt require running a sharing server at the hardware node level. Still requires the clients though so its still not ideal.

thanks in advance,

I want to create a computer/server setup that is capable of running 15 virtual machines and would like advice on the ideal virtualisation software and server hardware to purchase. I have setup and used VMware Workstation at work in the past, so have a basic familiarity with vmware.

Requirements:
-15 VM's will need to be running and in use at the same. I will want to expand and run more in future, possibly upto 30 VM's.
-Each machine may require upto 2GB RAM in use.
-The setup will be located in my home, will only be accessed by myself with the VM's ideally being accessed directly from the server the majority of the time (I'd want to be able to plug a monitor, keyboard and mouse into the server). I would also want the option of being able to use a PC to access the vm's over the network and also to be able to access remotely from another physical location.
-Each machine would need to be completely independant of the other. To the outside internet world, the VM's should not be recognised as being hosted by the same computer/server. Is it possible to allocate each VM a Virtual CPU, virtual OS and Virtual HDD (or SDD) etc?

What would be the ideal server requirements required for this setup - Tower or Rack, CPU power, amount of RAM etc?

Thanks.

Hey folks,

Quick background. I'm a master's student right now but i'm really into virtualization. I got my VCP and have used Autolabs as well as some great books to get there. I built everything on my desktop PC which served me well but I would like to get more into vCloud Director and start taking virtualization to the next level. I don't have the kind of money needed to invest in actual servers but I've been thinking of building out the following (roughly $2700), and would like your input as to if you think I'll be able to achieve success with vCD and other virtualization learning labs on the following:

* (2)x Micro ATX desktops each with the following:
* 40gig SATA HD's (just to house ESXi)
* 32 Gigs DDR PC1600 G.Skill Ram
* I7 - 2600k quad-core Processor
* Generic CPU Cooler
* 350 watt PSU
* No CD-Drive (I have an external usb drive I will use to setup these machines)

NAS:
* Synology DS1512+
* (5) Western Digital Red WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/

Router:
* TP-LINK SafeStream TL-R600VPN Gigabit Broadband VPN Router

What are your thoughts? I figure with 2 desktops running the previously mentioned specs I figure I can run between 16-18 VM's with roughly 4GB ram each while accessing their data via iSCSI off of the NAS. Is this a safe assumption?

If you were in my shoes would this be a direction you'd consider taking as well? Any thoughts, ideas, comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
