Default Best Host/VT combination for Notebook

Hoi,
im quite new to virtualization but I've been using vmware player for quite a while. But my host OS is Win 7 and it's so a big resources consumer. I used the vmware player once in unbuntu, but it was much slower as in win 7.
So my question is what is the best combination for of OS and VM-Monitor, commercial and open source to run a single/several VMs?

My notebook has a i7-820QM on a Intel PM45 Mainboard and 4GB DDR3Ram

thx

stefan
