just downloaded OpenSolaris2008.05.7z It shows up on my desktop (MacBook) as a Quicktime file? Quicktime will not open it and VMware does not recognize it as an image? did I download something other then the image? or does the image only work on windows?

I've seen some files when they down load have a temporary file on the desktop that has an icon which makes it look like a quicktime file, but if the file down loads completely this temporary file goes away and you are left with a nomal looking file. But then again, I've never downloaded a .7z file yet. If you downloaded the file with Firefox, check your download window and see if it completed the download. If the status was cleared from the window, I can't remember if there is a download log file in the Firefox files. If your file is a temp file, it obviously won't work, but Firefox may be able to finish the download so you don't have to do the whole thing. I hear this feature works, but I have no experience using it. I think Smyl has some info in one of the threads that explains how to extract the file, if Stuffit extractor can't do it.

Yes on the Motorola. 22 years. Where I used to hang out, there were two Steve's so you had FordSteve and MotorolaSteve.

The image is compressed w/ 7zip

You will need something like p7zip to uncompress this on the mac

Default Open Solaris and Sun Studio

I downloaded the VMware and then put the Open Solaris vmplanet image on the VM box. It has taken a few false starts but it appears to work. It is more than a decade since I last used UNIX so that is part of the problem in relearning the meagre amount I knew.

I am running the VM Ware on a VISTA 64 Enterprise running on a Intel Q6600, with 8 GB ram.

When I try and download Sun Studio 12 and use the installer I get a permissions error.

Our IT guru says I need root user priviledges?

How do I get root priviledges in the vmplanet VMI image?

All help appreciated, as stumbling around n the dark is fun for a while, but I would like to see the real light and not another freight train head light.

The password for the root account on the system should be "vmplanet.net"

if you are logged in as a normal user and need to run something as root, the easiest way to get these privileges is "su -" and then the password.
