Default New to VM

Hi, I am very new to VM/VM Appliaces and was wondering what kind of capabilities they have. As a little background, I do the majority of my work on a PC running Vista as dictated by a few of the applications I have to use. However, now I need to utilize a couple of apps that are available for only Unix/Linux.

If I use something like Ubuntu 8.10, can I install the applications I need to use r am I limited to what is packaged in the *.vmx?

Could I put the *.vmx on a portable drive and run it at home and at school on different machines or will this cause problems?

Does the *.vmx get updated with every usage or does it get reset after each use?

Thanks,
dave
