GigaSpaces Technologies, a pioneer of next-generation application platforms for mission-critical applications, is introducing a new solution for replicating data over a WAN using the GigaSpaces market-leading in-memory data grid and scaling technology.

“All enterprise IT organizations are concerned with replicating mission-critical data across sites, applications, or data centers for various purposes, such as disaster recovery and geographically distributed operations. The challenges they face are not insignificant – data must be kept consistent no matter how large the volumes being handled, without affecting performance, while zero-downtime and security are non-negotiable,” says Nati Shalom, GigaSpaces CTO. “GigaSpaces Multi-Site Data Replication provides the means to synchronize data across the enterprise, in an extremely simple and reliable way.”

The GigaSpaces Multi-Site Data Replication technology uses GigaSpaces’ in-memory data grid (IMDG) to ensure superb performance. While no disk access is involved, the data is highly available and there is no risk of data loss. The system enables easy scaling by adding partitions and distributing its gateway across several hosts.

Data replication using the GigaSpaces solution works in three easy steps: Data is mirrored to the GigaSpaces data grid using standard APIs; replication gateways are configured; and then, gateways are deployed at each site, enabling sites to bootstrap remotely without introducing data consistency issues. This means that once your data is stored in the GigaSpaces IMDG, replicating it across the WAN is merely a matter of adjusting some configuration files.

The GigaSpaces Multi-Site Data Replication solution is especially effective for the following use cases:

Disaster Recovery: Any mission-critical system must have a disaster recovery environment in a remote data center. GigaSpaces data replication ensures that data is always up to date at both sites, so that it is possible to continue from an exact point of failure. Unlike database replication solutions that are limited to read-only synchronization, GigaSpaces replication supports Active/Active sites, ensuring maximum utilization when both sites are active.

Multi-Site Operations: Large sites often serve users across geographies. To ensure consistently low latency, it is common to maintain a copy of the data close to the users in each location. The content delivery network (CDN) handles the distribution of static data. GigaSpaces data replication handles the synchronization of the dynamic data across sites.

Integration of Data Across Applications: Enterprises often run multiple applications that use the same data. Rather than sharing data between applications in batch mode, which bears a cost in terms of expense and accuracy, GigaSpaces data replication gives businesses real-time access to up-to-date information for all their applications.

Cloudbursting: Cloudbursting is economically appealing to enterprises that want to increase capacity on demand using the public cloud pay-per-use model rather than investing in additional on-premise computing resources. True cloudbursting requires the ability to burst both processes and their associated data. The GigaSpaces replication solution provides a secure private data cloud between the primary data center and the remote site. Processes can be spawned quickly when needed and get local access to their data.

“Part of the GigaSpaces vision is making it easy to resolve tomorrow’s technology challenges today,” says Shalom. “Our Multi-Site Data Replication technology is a perfect example of this – we have built into the technology all the most advanced features, such as data filtering, transactionality, management and monitoring, high availability and self-healing, and more... But for the enterprise, the whole process is completed with just a few clicks.”

Cisco announced that in just over two years its new Cisco Unified Computing System(TM), (Cisco UCS(TM)) which integrates compute, networking, management and virtualization, has captured the attention of data center managers and CIOs alike -- over 10,000 customers worldwide, including 3,000 in Europe, have deployed UCS. Many industry observers were skeptical that a new computing technology could take hold in this highly competitive market, but the cost and business benefits proved compelling across all industries and all workloads. Since it began shipping in July 2009, UCS has captured 53 industry benchmark performance world records, and garnered a dozen industry awards for innovation.

According to a recent Servers and Virtualization Study by TheInfoPro(TM), Cisco took the lead among server vendors in vision, technical innovation, product performance, and sales force. Cisco was named by 33 percent as "the most exciting server vendor," eight percentage points ahead of the second placed vendor. *

The 2011 Cisco Cloud Index forecasts that cloud computing is transforming business: over 50 percent of computing workloads in data centers are predicted to be cloud-based by 2014, and global cloud traffic will grow over 12 times by 2015, to 1.6 zettabytes per year -- the equivalent of over four days of business-class video for every person on earth. This explosive cloud growth requires the advanced data center capabilities provided by UCS to support end-to-end cloud application delivery.

Designed from the ground up with a "clean slate" approach, Cisco UCS is an integrated system, designed to optimize compute, networking, storage access, virtualization and management. UCS tapped into a powerful market demand for a new approach to computing, enabling IT organizations to unleash new business models with its innovative, integrated architecture. Customers are able to reduce the time to deploy new applications, improve business agility and reduce costs. UCS is the first fabric computing platform that combines industry-standard, x86-architecture servers with networking and storage access into an integrated system. Cisco works with industry-leading infrastructure and software vendors, including BMC, CA, Citrix, EMC, Hitachi Data System, Microsoft, NetApp, Oracle, Red Hat, SAP, VMware to provide pre-tested, end-to-end solutions.

Cisco UCS Customers Worldwide Gain Business Benefits Monsanto

Monsanto, a leading global provider of agricultural technology that helps farmers produce more crops using fewer resources, initially deployed UCS to host virtualization for its SAP applications with VMware, which allowed them to reduce 160 physical application servers to just 12 UCS blades hosting 200 SAP Virtual Machines. Monsanto's data center refresh project further expanded the UCS footprint to support additional applications such as Oracle and Weblogic; with 80 UCS blades now supporting 1600 Virtual machines and plans for continued expansion. "By taking advantage of UCS's integrated fabric capabilities and unique service profiles we've reduced power by 35 kilowatts, eliminated hundreds of LAN cables and SAN ports, and created a highly available and agile application environment to support virtualization and especially Virtual Machine mobility," said Todd Eyrick, business alignment and strategy lead, Global Infrastructure, Monsanto. "UCS Service Profiles, which allow us to assign characteristics for both physical and virtual services using a software template, are key to achieving our goal in delivering an IaaS model."

Euronet Worldwide Euronet Worldwide, an industry leader and provider of highly secure electronic financial transaction solutions, established the first independent ATM network in Central and Eastern Europe. Euronet Worldwide processes more than $50 billion in ATM, prepaid and money transfer payments for more than 115 financial institutions, 200 mobile operators, 320,000 retailer and agent locations, and millions of individual consumers in 46 countries. With the help of S&T Consulting Hungary, Euronet deployed Cisco UCS combined with NetApp and VMware technologies in a joint solution for its central data center located in Hungary, which supports transaction processing for Euronet subsidiaries in 26 countries throughout Central and Eastern Europe. "We needed a cloud infrastructure that could help us respond quickly to constantly changing business needs and scale capacity on demand," said Suresh Nandihalli, chief operating officer, Euronet EFT Europe. "This deeply integrated solution gives us a lower total cost of ownership, better return on investment, and a much more agile infrastructure to support our business applications and help us address business challenges and tasks."

The Chinese University of Hong Kong The Chinese University of Hong Kong, a top university in Hong Kong and Asia, centralized and virtualized its information technology resources by deploying Cisco Unified Data Center architecture with Cisco Unified Computing System and Nexus switches to streamline data center management, provision computer resources more rapidly, and enhance computing power for academic users, especially for medical and scientific research. "Our users have high expectations of our data center infrastructure -- they want faster and more flexible provisioning as well as lower cost," said Philip Leung, Director of Information Technology Services, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. "It's very important to select a solution which can integrate all the main components including the network, the servers, the storage and the backup. Reliability, scalability, ease of automation and tight integration were the main criteria when we selected the Cisco data centre infrastructure platform."

AudienceView Ticketing With 140 clients representing over 500 venues in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Americas, AudienceView Ticketing is a global provider for white-label, web-based ticketing solutions to theatres, arenas, stadiums, and arts organizations. AudienceView deployed a compact and efficient turnkey solution comprised of Cisco UCS, EMC storage and virtualization with VMware vSphere Hypervisor to support its cloud computing environment. "Our main goal as an organization is growth, and now we have a standard building block for provisioning our data centers as we grow," said Gopi Balasingam, Vice President of Operations, AudienceView Ticketing. "UCS accelerates our time-to-market significantly -- we used to spend up to a day and a half provisioning a new server, but now we can do it in 60 minutes -- that business agility will translate into huge savings as we open up new data centers in the Asia-Pacific region. We also reduced operating costs by 25 percent because UCS requires less peripheral hardware."

Boston University Medical Center "UCS provides a powerful and flexible solution for our research environment -- instead of dedicating each server to a specific application, we can use UCS service profiles to change the blades to support a new application in minutes," said Dr. John Meyers, technology director at Boston University Medical Center's Department of Medicine. "We've also used UCS to provision highly secure file transfer protocol (FTP) to share enormous quantities of data with other research institutions to facilitate collaboration on medical research."

ISV Partner Ecosystem for UCS Independent software vendors are developing to the open Cisco UCS application programming interface (API), with over 10,000 applications supported today. UCS is an ideal platform for agile, on-demand delivery of IT resources: the UCS API enables cloud management software to quickly reconfigure computing, network, and storage access functions as business needs change.

UCS Supports Green Data Centers and Energy Efficiency IT managers can achieve more energy efficient data centers with the Cisco Unified Computing System -- it uses one-half the components, and requires less cabling and power/cooling than legacy servers. Over 30 billion kilowatt hours of energy per year could be saved by replacing aging traditional servers and support infrastructure through unified computing and virtualization in the data center. This equals the energy output of 15 U.S. coal-fired electric plants and 35 million tons of CO2.

Cisco Data Center Architecture Cisco's data center architecture is comprised of Unified Computing, Unified Fabric, and Unified Management. This integrated architecture, the Cisco Unified Data Center, provides faster provisioning of new services, reduces total cost of ownership and transforms how IT supports business goals, creating a foundation for next generation data centers whether they are bare-metal, highly virtualized or cloud computing environments.

Learning Technologies 2012: Xyleme, Inc. announced the release and immediate availability of their latest technological breakthrough, Bravais™. Bravais [pronounced brav-ey] is a cloud solution that allows organizations to quickly build personalized learning applications, connecting students, employees and customers to the content they need, using the apps they prefer, on the devices they choose. The announcement was made this morning at Learning Technologies 2012 in London.

Unlike traditional content sharing systems or learning management systems, Bravais stores content as individual learning objects, allowing precise search, dynamic assembly and delivery of relevant information. As learning environments transition from formal courses to informal learning, Bravais gives organizations the platform and tools they require to deliver content to the next generation of performance support, social and mobile learning applications.

Xyleme’s new cloud solution supports several key business needs including:

Central storage of all content in multiple formats, eliminating access restrictions

Precise search for relevant topics, procedures and questions instead of full courses

Dynamic assembly of learning objects to build personalized learning materials

User Management and permissions

Integration with existing applications such as the LMS and Social Platforms

A set of APIs that allows customers to build their own learning applications

A new iPhone app that provides access to Bravais for real-time Performance Support

CDW's Cloud Computing Tracking Poll found that one of the top reasons companies are adopting cloud computing today is to provide anywhere access to documents and applications. “Bravais is unlocking the learning content that organizations already have, making it available in multiple formats, and providing them the ability to build targeted applications that meet audience specific business requirements,” explained Mark Hellinger, President and CEO of Xyleme.

“Today’s workforce and workplace are changing – and, quite frankly, most Learning & Development departments are struggling to keep up, struggling to remain relevant. Our research here is clear: essential differentiators for best L&D functions today are the abilities to deliver personalized learning as close as possible to where work happens, quickly, and in all of the forms and formats already used by the learner. Proximity – Timeliness – Versatility - Adaptability,” responded David Mallon, Vice President of Research at Bersin & Associates. “From a technology perspective, that means taking the tools for creation, management and distribution of learning to the cloud. Of course, this is all easier said than done. So, for most, finding a forward thinking provider with the technology and agility to enable your cloud strategy is the obvious first step.”

Amazon Web Services LLC (AWS), an Amazon.com company (NASDAQ:AMZN), today announced the AWS Storage Gateway, a service that provides enterprises with a new option to securely upload data to the AWS cloud for scalable, reliable, cost-effective storage. The AWS Storage Gateway connects an on-premises software appliance with cloud-based storage for seamless integration between on-premises IT environments and AWS storage infrastructure. The service provides low-latency performance by maintaining data in on-premises storage hardware while asynchronously uploading data to AWS, where it is encrypted and securely stored in the Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). The AWS Storage Gateway supports industry standard storage protocols, enabling customers to take advantage of cloud based storage without re-architecting existing applications.

“With the AWS Storage Gateway, we’re providing businesses yet another way to easily take advantage of AWS’s secure, scalable and cost-effective cloud storage for use with their on-premises applications,” said Alyssa Henry, General Manager of AWS Storage Services. “The AWS Storage Gateway works with your existing applications using a standard iSCSI interface, securely transfers your data to AWS over SSL, and stores data encrypted at rest in Amazon S3.”

The AWS Storage Gateway also makes it easy to leverage the on-demand compute capacity of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) for additional capacity during peak periods, for new projects, or as a more cost-effective way to run normal enterprise workloads. To take advantage of this compute capacity, enterprises can mirror on-premises data to Amazon EC2 instances by using the AWS Storage Gateway to upload the data to Amazon S3 in the form of Amazon EBS snapshots. Amazon EBS volumes can easily be created from these snapshots (using either the AWS Management Console or Amazon EC2’s APIs) and attached to Amazon EC2 compute instances. Once attached, enterprises’ Amazon EC2 instances will have access to this data to do any processing or computation desired.

IT-Lifeline provides data vaulting and disaster recovery services to regulated industries such as banking and healthcare organizations. “We look forward to using the AWS Storage Gateway ourselves, as well as integrating it into our BLACKCLOUD service for our customers,” said Matthew Gerber, CEO at IT-Lifeline. “With this capability, our customers and our company can take advantage of simplified data vaulting and practically infinite elasticity for disaster recovery needs.”

“Growth in our enterprise applications continues to drive growth in storage costs. The AWS Storage Gateway will enable Coeur d'Alene Mines to take advantage of the elasticity of the AWS Cloud, driving down our costs for data storage and computing infrastructure required for disaster recovery,” said Donald J. Moss, Vice President of Information Systems, Coeur d'Alene Mines.

Datapipe offers solutions for managing and securing mission-critical IT services. "We develop and implement solutions for our clients to reliably store and backup their critical application data. Many of our clients store user-generated content locally. Traditional off-site backup products are often costly to maintain and not geared toward automation for recovery. A cost-effective and reliable alternative, AWS's Storage Gateway addresses these issues by plugging seamlessly into the environments we manage for our customers, providing low-latency data access, while encrypting and snapshotting data to AWS’s cloud storage infrastructure," said Ed Laczynski, VP Cloud Strategy at Datapipe.

Pricing for the AWS Storage Gateway is $125/month per installed gateway and comes with a 60 day free trial. Snapshot storage pricing starts at only $0.14 per gigabyte per month.

Cloud products and services were in abundance at International CES 2012, due to the increasing demand for easy to use, flexible, and high availability solutions for accessing information. In three separate reports, Strategy Analytics covers global cloud services, with detailed forecasts and analysis of opportunities and challenges in this rapidly expanding market, including:

Software as a Service (SaaS);

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS); and

Platform as a Service (PaaS).

The Strategy Analytics Extended Enterprise Software Strategies (EESS) service report, “Global Cloud Computing Services Forecast and Analysis: Software, Infrastructure and Platform Development as a Service Move to the Mainstream,” shows that cloud services have achieved mainstream status, as demonstrated by the proliferation and diversity of cloud offerings. Additionally, significant expenditure for cloud based services is expected to grow from $31 Billion in 2011 to $82 Billion by 2016.

Andrew Brown, Director, Enterprise Practice, says, “With demonstrated cost savings and diminished security fears, all three types of cloud services—SaaS, IaaS and PaaS—are growing rapidly due to cloud computing’s cost saving opportunities and diminished security concerns. Cloud computing offers compelling alternatives to CEOs, CFOs and operations managers who are reviewing IT and data center budgets.”

Co-author, Sue Rudd, Director, Service Provider Analysis, notes, “Mobile operators now have an opening to generate significant revenue through offers of more secure road warrior applications. Proprietary corporate information—long vulnerable to security breaches because of lost smartphones and mobile PCs—will be less vulnerable with appropriate cloud programs. By hosting mobile applications in the cloud, mobile operators can help CIOs increase security and return wireless applications back under IT control.”

ManageEngine, the real-time IT management company, today announced the integration of its agent-based network monitoring software, MSP Center Plus, with Zoho Reports, the cloud-based reporting and business intelligence service from Zoho. The move enables managed service providers (MSPs) to easily organize data and create insightful reports and dashboards, all of which are vital to demonstrating their efforts to safeguard and enhance the performance of their customers’ distributed networks.

The biggest reporting challenges for MSPs concern custom reporting and big data sets generated by monitoring solutions. MSPs need custom reports to meet each customer’s unique demands, but most monitoring software cannot create such reports. Most third-party reporting tools offer custom reporting but do not integrate with MSPs’ monitoring software, leaving MSPs to manually consolidate reports created by multiple tools. Meanwhile, the big data sets generated by increasing mobile and other network device traffic only compound the reporting challenge.

“Service providers spend a lot of their valuable time creating reports manually,” said Dev Anand, MSP Center Plus product manager for ManageEngine. “The integration of MSP Center Plus and Zoho Reports simplifies and automates reporting on different sets of monitoring data for different customers, giving MSPs more time to work, rather than report, for their customers.”

Assessing the Advanced Reporting in MSP Center Plus

With today’s announcement, the entire feature set of Zoho Reports is now available to MSP Center Plus users, giving MSPs the flexibility to easily generate customer-specific reports. The advanced reporting capabilities most significant to MSP Center Plus users include an easy to use, spreadsheet-like interface that supports drag-and-drop report and dashboard building. Users also have immediate access to 60 pre-configured performance reports and 6 pre-configured dashboard views.

Additionally, the entire database of MSP Center Plus is uploaded to Zoho Reports, so users can create powerful, custom reports with SQL queries written in any database dialect or syntax. Users can also take advantage of standard relational modeling features like defining relationships between tables (using lookup columns), enforcing data integrity, auto-joining data across multiple tables, and auto-numbering.

Other highlights of the Zoho Reports integration with MSP Center Plus include:

Variety of reporting components. Users have access to a wide range of reporting components, including pie charts, bar graphs, pivot tables and tabular view components that ensure the most insightful report building and analysis possible.

Collaborative analysis. Users can develop reports together, enabling informed, collaborative business decisions. Fine-grained access control gives the report owner control over data and reports being shared.

Reports anywhere. Users can embed reports in websites, intranets, blogs, applications and Microsoft SharePoint Server. Reports can also be exported to PDF, XLS and CVS formats and emailed to MSP customers.
