WAN Virtualization leader Talari Networks, Inc. today announced it has secured $4.5 million in financing from current backers including Menlo Ventures, Silver Creek Ventures and private investors. Mr. H. Dubose Montgomery, founder and managing director of Menlo Ventures, will join Talari Networks’ board of directors.

“With the accelerated pace of server centralization and the focus on both private and public cloud computing, Talari is in the right place at the right time to capitalize on the growing need for more bandwidth and ultra-reliable, business-class WANs that don’t break the bank,” Montgomery explained. “I look forward to being more closely involved with this innovative company as it continues to build a strong and loyal customer base.”

Recently announced customer deployments include Equity Office Properties and Whiting & Partners. Both companies are seeing significant bandwidth and reliability gains at a much lower cost than the incumbent WAN or other options they evaluated before selecting WAN Virtualization.

“I am more convinced than ever that our unique technology will increase in importance as enterprises with centrally hosted applications look to address any combination of bandwidth, reliability or cost issues with their WANs,” stated Talari Networks’ CEO Emerick Woods. “This funding will be used to expand sales and customer-facing functions to meet that demand.”

Talari Networks’ innovative Adaptive Private Networking (APN) technology for WAN Virtualization enables network managers to use multiple WAN connections, including MPLS and any kind of Internet WAN links, to augment or replace individual private WAN connections. APN uses end-to-end algorithms to do continuous, real-time traffic engineering, reacting sub-second to not just link failures, but also to congestion-related network problems. Talari enables businesses to build a WAN that is simultaneously less expensive, much higher bandwidth, much lower cost and with lower ongoing operational costs than today’s proprietary, single vendor WANs.

Talari’s newest appliance, the Mercury T510, designed for branch offices, and the latest revision of software began shipping earlier this month.

Lancope, Inc., a leader in flow-based security and network performance monitoring, today announced that it achieved remarkable corporate and technology milestones in 2011. These milestones include 13 consecutive quarters of profitability and quadrupling the number of million-dollar deals over the previous year. Overall, Lancope's revenue grew by 45 percent in 2011, and the company signed on 47 brand new customers, bringing its total customer count to more than 550 enterprises around the globe. Lancope is also experiencing a 95 percent renewal rate among its customers.

"Our accomplishments this year validate the criticality of NetFlow for gaining end-to-end network visibility and maintaining high levels of performance and security for government and enterprise infrastructure," said Mike Potts, president and CEO of Lancope. "As networks continue to grow in complexity, and online attackers become even more nefarious, more and more organizations are turning to Lancope's flow-based monitoring technology to fill in the gaps left by conventional security solutions."

Lancope also achieved several significant advancements in its StealthWatch System in 2011. Unlike conventional solutions that block attacks at the perimeter or rely on signature updates, StealthWatch leverages NetFlow and other types of flow data from existing systems to provide comprehensive, continuous awareness of everything happening on the network. This complete visibility eliminates network blind spots and dramatically expedites troubleshooting for a wide range of network and security issues – at a fraction of the cost of traditional monitoring solutions.

With the launch of StealthWatch 6.0 in early 2011, Lancope added key capabilities for application awareness, advanced reporting and relational flow mapping. Q3 2011 saw the subsequent release of StealthWatch 6.1, which extended behavioral analytics to perimeter devices like firewalls, enabling the integration of internal and external monitoring for more advanced contextual awareness.

Version 6.1 also doubled StealthWatch's maximum flow processing speed to 3 million flows per second, and expanded its storage capabilities to up to four terabytes. To further assist customers in achieving a single, consolidated view into their network infrastructure, Lancope also added interoperability with SIEM technology from HP ArcSight into StealthWatch in 2011.

These efforts resulted in several awards for Lancope, including one for "Best Network Security" in the GSN Homeland Security Awards, as well as the Frost & Sullivan Global Customer Value Enhancement Award for Network Performance and Cloud-Based Application Monitoring. The company was also invited to present at several prominent industry events in 2011, including Interop, Infosecurity Europe, Cisco Live and several vertical conferences in the healthcare and education sectors.

User education continued to be a major focus for Lancope in 2011 as the company advised enterprises on how to maximize their use of flow data for vastly improved network and security operations. Lancope presented more than 30 of its popular 'University of NetFlow' seminars last year, as well as monthly webinars with guests including Cisco and Forrester Research. Lancope also collaborated with Enterprise Management Associates in 2011 to examine and produce an educational report on NetFlow trends and usages.

"As a result of trends such as IT consumerization and virtualization, the threat landscape and enterprise computing requirements will continue to become more intricate in 2012 and beyond," added Potts. "Now more than ever, organizations need to seek out advanced solutions like StealthWatch to keep them at the leading edge of security."

CALIENT Technologies, Inc., the global leader for photonic switching technology, today announced a software upgrade to its FiberConnect 320X (FC320X) photonic switch that improves security in multi-tenant applications and adds new configuration flexibility.

The improvements are included in version 2.4 of the FC320X operating software. The software can be used to create port groups of any number of ports and assign a specific user to manage and view traffic from that port group. This is particularly important in multi-tenant applications, where secure virtual networks must be built and managed independently.

For government applications that involve multiple security clearance levels, the port group management feature supports seven user classification levels, which allows port group management to be segregated by security clearance level.

“The FiberConnect 320X is the highest density photonic switch on the market and the expanded virtualization features provide the security needed to truly make the best use of that density in government applications,” said Daniel Tardent, director of product marketing at CALIENT.

The FiberConnect 320X platform offers the industry’s highest density photonic switch with 640 fiber terminations or 320 ports (transmit and receive). It is based on CALIENT’s 3D microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology that uses silicon micro mirrors to switch incoming fiber-optic signals from port to port. The product has an installed base of 80,000 fiber terminations, is Telcordia proven and has been shipping for eight years.

To ease installation, the new software brings an innovative pre-configuration mode that allows the switch to be set up using dark fiber. Previously, the FiberConnect 320X needed lit fiber to be configured. Version 2.4 of the software also features a new graphical user interface (GUI), including an improved snapshot of all the ports with color coordinated statuses and a simplified process of enabling cross-connections, now in as little as three clicks.

For telecom users, the new software expands the number of TL1 commands that can be used, providing better switch information in telecom networks that leverage the TL1 management protocol.

Version 2.4 of the software is now shipping with all FiberConnect 320X switches, and is available for field upgrades.

Motorola Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: MSI) today unveiled the NX Integrated Services Platform – including the NX 4500 and NX 6500 – to simplify retailers’ deployment and management of branch office networking and communications. This new branch office solution allows retailers to elevate the customer experience while reducing the burden for IT staff. Retail associates can now have mobile access to voice, data and advanced applications, all delivered by a single platform.

Retailers are challenged with managing complex interactions with today’s connected consumers, to build a consistent brand experience in-store, online and with mobile commerce. Increasing use of mobile devices along with bandwidth-heavy mobile applications, both by retail associates and shoppers, requires IT infrastructure that supports today’s needs with the flexibility to evolve for tomorrow.

Motorola also launched the Proximity Awareness and Analytics Solution, further advancing retailers’ abilities to offer personalized customer service. This solution brings real-time data collection, analysis and visualization to Motorola’s industry-leading WLAN portfolio. It enables innovative, real-time mobility-based loyalty programs and delivers actionable data for improving the effectiveness of store operations, enhancing customer engagement and conversion.

KEY FACTS: NX Integrated Services Platform

The NX Integrated Services Platform delivers network extensibility and is designed to meet the needs of the enterprise with both the NX 4500 for small-medium branch offices and the NX 6500 for medium-large branch offices.

The modular platform will enable retailers to dramatically reduce telecommunications costs with SIP trunking while still leveraging existing phones and wiring. Initial modules include a wired switch, wireless LAN controller, branch voice over IP (VoIP) communications, radio link for push-to-talk interoperability with two-way radios, text messaging and mobile extension of the PBX to WLAN and cellular.

Shunra, the industry-recognized authority in network virtualization and application performance engineering, today announced the availability of NetworkCatcher Express for iPhone and Android, their newest mobile application performance engineering offering.

With NetworkCatcher Express Mobile, organizations now have a way to immediately measure network performance from a mobile phone and subsequently use that captured data to virtualize network conditions within the test lab. By speeding the discovery of real-world network conditions, NetworkCatcher Express Mobile expedites the test process and helps ensure that test results accurately reflect real-world application performance.

This mobile app, available now in both the Apple App Store and the Android Market, provides on-demand measurements of the mobile network on which it is being used. Users simply download the app and select a test destination – any addressable domain or IP address can be tested. The app will connect via the mobile network to the selected destination and measure both packet loss and network latency. Once it captures these network conditions, NetworkCatcher Express Mobile displays the results graphically and emails a summary of network conditions and specific impairment measurements for analysis.

In addition to a summary email, NetworkCatcher Express Mobile generates a dynamic results file that contains the captured network conditions. This file can be easily imported into Shunra’s core application performance testing solutions, Shunra PerformanceSuite or Shunra vCat, in order to reliably recreate real-world mobile network conditions within the application test environment.

“As organizations continue to engage both a mobile workforce and mobile customer base, there is a growing and necessary focus on application performance,” said Gary Jackson, CEO of Shunra. “Organizations can no longer afford to deploy tested applications only to find they don’t perform as expected. NetworkCatcher Express Mobile represents one more way we are arming companies with knowledge about the effect of real-world networks on the performance of their applications.”

Today’s announcement from Shunra represents a continuing focus from the company on enabling more accurate and reliable testing platforms for mobile applications. The company expects several additional announcements in the first quarter of 2012 in support of this effort, including partnerships and additional product capabilities.

Talari Networks, Inc. today announced Whiting & Partners has deployed Talari's WAN Virtualization appliances to ensure high-availability networks for voice and data applications, including virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Using Talari's WAN Virtualization technology, the firm of general practice chartered accountants has increased bandwidth by a factor of five, cut the cost per Mbps in half, and made the network more reliable for their real-time and interactive applications.

WAN Virtualization (using Talari's adaptive private networking (APN) appliances) aggregates two or more network connections (e.g., DSL, cable, fiber and Ethernet over copper, etc.) into a single logical network, continuously monitoring the performance of every network path between six remote sites and the firm's head office in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England. Measurements of loss, latency and jitter are used to detect and respond, sub-second, to congestion, for real-time traffic engineering decisions on a packet-by-packet basis.

Since 2005, Whiting & Partners has relied on a Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network with a single DSL-based tail circuit connecting each site. But the MPLS network, with no tail circuit SLA, was consistently unreliable, with sites sometimes going down for a week at a time.

With Talari, the MPLS network is still in place, and a separate DSL connection has been added at each site. "This gives us complete carrier diversity and, with Talari, the resiliency that we were looking for," says Chris Haydon, IT manager with Whiting & Partners.

Most incoming traffic is routed over the MPLS network because of the available bandwidth. However, outgoing traffic is typically directed by Talari over the DSL circuits. Now when the MPLS connection goes down, all traffic is instantly diverted over the DSL circuits, thus ensuring no detectable interruption of business-critical applications.

In anticipation of VDI and eventually VoIP, Haydon has begun converting the MPLS circuits over to a new service from TalkTalk that will provide 10 Mbps Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) to all of Whiting & Partners' office sites. Talari's Mercury T730 and T200 appliances will provide resiliency in combination with these new circuits.

Once VDI and VoIP are deployed, Whiting & Partners will have the flexibility to open a new office much more easily with less cost, according to Haydon.

"Today we'd need a file server and fat client PCs," says Haydon. "In the future, all we'll need is a dumb terminal on the desktop, an IP phone, a Talari T200, and some connectivity."

Shenick Network Systems, provider of per-flow IP communication test and performance measurement solutions, today announced that it is leading the market with an IP test and measurement solution that can operate in a multi-hypervisor environment. Shenick’s diversifEye™ Virtual Machine (VM), a virtual, per-flow test solution for cloud computing environments, gives service providers and network equipment manufacturers the ability to emulate and analyze real-time IP traffic in cloud environments for multiple hypervisors right down to each individual application flow.

Shenick is bringing the benefits of testing the virtualization of key network infrastructure in the cloud, ensuring that data migration works properly in both crisis and everyday data migration scenarios. For companies that deploy networks in virtualized environments they need to have the ability to test with opensource hypervisors as well as fully supported vendor hypervisors. The end result is virtualized network performance that is more reliable with greater visibility of issues in virtual IP networks.

“The migration from dedicated network boxes to flexible, fluid cloud environments requires a test capability that can work with dedicated environments or can operate in the new virtualized or cloud environments,” said Olga Yashkova, Program Manager-Global Communications Test & Measurement Practice, Frost & Sullivan, “Shenick’s diversifEye gives the market a comprehensive solution for determining network performance with multiple hypervisors in the cloud.”

“To test a cloud environment, you need a completely virtualized test system. diversifEyeVM emulates and tests a cloud infrastructure with multi-hypervisors, giving test analysis right down to each application, so that virtualized networks run smoothly especially in extreme situations,” said Robert Winters, CMO, Shenick.

Unlike other solutions, Shenick’s diversifEyeVM gives network equipment manufacturers greater flexibility, scaling capabilities, easier software migration to virtual machine-based testing and the ability to pin-point errors across layers 2-7 on a highly granular basis.

Shenick’s diversifEyeVM is available immediately.
