Maginatics Announces MagFS Version 2.3 “File System for the Cloud”

VMworld 2013 US
Maginatics Inc., the only provider of an elastic file system for the cloud, today announced the release of MagFS 2.3, the latest version of its flagship product, MagFS (Maginatics File System). MagFS 2.3 features new and enhanced capabilities that better enable enterprises to transition from traditional, monolithic storage systems to cost-effective, scalable and agile software-defined storage architectures at their own pace, with no disruption to their existing workflows, applications or IT operations. Maginatics will demonstrate MagFS 2.3 at VMworld 2013, booth #218, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco from August 25 – 29.

MagFS 2.3 includes these industry-leading features:

  • Supercharged Performance and Scalability: MagFS 2.3 introduces numerous new features to benefit both of these key attributes. These features include streamlined metadata operations, increased WAN optimization, workload-dependent chunk size optimizations and improved client performance.
  • Scale-Out Namespaces: Users can now combine multiple MagFS shares into a single namespace, providing seamless scale-out shared capacity with location transparency.
  • Disaster Recovery: Administrators can mount metadata backups, securely stored in the cloud, directly to a new namespace for fast disaster recovery. Rapid restoration of required portions of any namespace is now a reality.
  • Enhanced High Availability: MagFS now supports Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) as a metadata storage endpoint, allowing for fault-tolerance across Availability Zones as well as full integration with RDS snapshots and recovery.
  • Support for Google Compute Engine: To increase the options for rapidly deploying the virtual server component of MagFS, Maginatics has expanded its support for virtualization technologies to include Google Compute Engine (GCE).
  • Enhanced Linux Support: MagFS now supports a wider range of Linux clients (CentOS, Red Hat, Ubuntu and Raspbian) for data center and in-cloud deployments where Linux workloads are a must. MagFS can be deployed on Linux in seconds via distro packages and now matches other platforms with support for multiple users per machine. Highlighting the small footprint of the MagFS Agent, MagFS introduces support for Raspberry Pi from this release.
  • Improved Features. MagFS 2.3 includes bug fixes along with a host of features that improve restore times, enhance usability, increase robustness and simplify administration.

In addition to a raft of new features, Maginatics now offers customers a greater choice of back-end object (cloud) storage solutions with the addition of support for Basho Riak CS and Cloudian object-storage systems.

“MagFS, together with object storage, is positioned to transform enterprise storage for years to come in much the same way that NAS did decades ago,” said Amarjit Gill, co-founder and CEO of Maginatics. In particular:

  • MagFS Boosts Productivity for Geographically Distributed Enterprises. Traditional NAS enabled teams within an office to collaborate with one another by concurrently accessing a shared capacity pool. MagFS extends this capability to today’s geographically distributed office, permitting distributed and mobile teams to securely collaborate on files at enterprise scale.
  • MagFS Is the Elastic File System for the Cloud: The cloud provides immediate access to compute and storage capacity. Today, however, moving workloads to the cloud requires customers to rewrite their applications specifically for the cloud or to build clones of “old school systems” in the cloud, sacrificing scale, elasticity, performance or all three. MagFS is the only elastic file system for the cloud that allows unmodified applications to run in the cloud without compromises.

“After researching all of the alternatives, OGL chose MagFS as the value-add front-end for our private cloud offering focused on enterprise customers,” said Paul Colwell, head of R&D for OGL Computer, the premier provider of IT solutions and support to over 1,000 businesses across the U.K. “With its smooth installation, fast data access and robust mobile clients, MagFS is the best product we have ever tested. We’re pleased to see that Maginatics is maintaining an aggressive roadmap and rapid pace of innovation as witnessed by this latest release.”

Availability and Pricing
Maginatics MagFS version 2.3 will be generally available beginning in September, 2013. Current MagFS term- and perpetual-license customers will be able to upgrade to MagFS 2.3 at no additional charge. As with all MagFS versions, pricing is based strictly on license term and actual capacity used; there are no per-seat or per-user fees.
