Virtualization Benefits

Let's take a look at some of the top benefits for virtualization. ronhogue.com Hi. I'm Ron Hogue. Virtualization can be a big part of cloud computing. In this video, I want to examine my top 5 reasons for using virtualization. In my mind, there are two major benefits for leveraging virtualization. The first, is that it allows us to have multiple Operating Systems (or OSs) running simultaneously on the same machine. Take a look at my computer. I'm running Windows 7 on my HP laptop but I also have a virtual machine that is running a Linux operating system. I can operate in either environment — leveraging tools in both operating systems at the same time. The second major benefit is that we can better utilize our hardware. If I take a look at my processor usage, I'll see it is just a small fraction of what it could be — often less than 10%. If I install multiple simultaneous operating systems onto a single machine, then I can take advantage of the machines available processing power rather than letting much of it go to waste. There are three additional benefits that aren't as important to me but are still worth mentioning. Energy consumption should lessen when several physical machines have been consolidated into fewer machines. If what once took me 10 servers to run, now only takes me two servers to run, my power requirements have dropped so I'm now using less power. In data centers, rack space is real estate — the more you want, the more you pay. With virtualization, we …
